If you said “L’Eau D’Issey” really quickly, doesn’t it sound like “Odyssey”? Try it.

Yup! It does, L’Eau D’Issey is a pun. Translated directly to English it means “Issey’s Water”.

In 1992, this Japanese designer (known for his ground breaking artistic designs), wanted to create a fragrance that was unique, different and well…just not typical 90’s

He used earth’s source of life as an inspiration, H20 (for those of you that don’t know that’s the chemical notation for water ;) )

Water? You see Mr. Miyake (三宅 一生, Miyake Issei), being Japanese, wanted to create a fragrance that will mimic the tranquility and Zen of water. Fused with the crispness of white Lillies and Freesia with a touch of white Carnations, you have east meets west, a fragrance that remains modern 17 years after it first launched.

The Packaging

The box is unusually triangular (think of a huge Toblerone chocolate bar); it shows off Miyake’s artistic flair for modern design. Simple, clean and artistic, the box is a light cream color with black text in the center of a black lined square. The bottom of the box, stipulates the size of the bottle.

The Bottle

Clean, clear or frosted (depending on refillable bottle), the bottle designed by Fabien Baron (Calvin Klein CK one), represents a modern take on a water droplet. The bottle shaped like a cone, is topped off with a silver cap that completes the bottle shape.

The Fragrance

L’Eau D’Issey Issey Miyake is available as Eau De Toilette and Eau De Parfum

The scent of white flowers, on a chilly morning. Clean, tranquil and refreshed.

This clear liquid, aquatic floral has top notes of Lotus, Freesia, and Rose Water and mid and bottom notes of Carnation, White Lilies, Fresh Peonies and Musk. Fragrance designer Jacques Cavallier (Yves Saint Laurent Cinema) has manifested Issey Miyake’s vision: The scent of tranquility…the scent of water from the east.

In my opinion this fragrance is very similar (like a watered down version) to Calvin Klein’s Escape for Women. Let me know what you guys think ;)

Fresh, Sweet, and a tad Spicy at the same time. BOSS Bottled or BOSS No.06, launched in 1998, by fashion house HUGO BOSS caused a bit of confusion due to it’s name.

The BOSS fragrance before this was also called ‘BOSS’. Once BOSS Bottled was launched, the original BOSS was referred to as BOSS No.01, and the name stuck ever since.

I must admit, this really is one of my all time favourite scents. The sweet and spicy mixture reminds me of my other favourite scent Chanel Allure Pour Homme.

Many people might think that the earlier BOSS fragrances are designed specifically for the more mature man. But I tend to disagree…as with all fragrances; I believe that it is absurd to think that a fragrance has an ‘age restriction’.

I remember being at work one Friday evening, this is about 7 years ago. A 65 year old woman, came into the store and picked up 3 bottles of FCUK her fragrance. And stupid me, asked her, “Is that for your grand daughter? I could gift wrap that for you if you’d like?”

She replied, “No, actually, it’s for me..I simply love this fragrance, and I always buy more than one bottle at a time.”

So there you go. A fragrance can be worn by anybody, no matter how old or young. And don’t let anybody tell you any different.

Back to BOSS Bottled. At first spray, the yellowy fragrance might come across as too strong, and musky almost. But I’l say, give it about 10 minutes. You will smell the sophistications of the Cinnamon, and the perky Apple Blossom from this fragrance.

BOSS fragrances, are marketed as more serious fragrances from the house of HUGO BOSS. With HUGO fragrances marketed as a more urban, care free, not so serious fragrance.

BOSS fragrances represent the essence of  the HUGO BOSS fashion label: Confidence, Power, Masculinity.

 The Packaging:

A grey box, not covered by any plastic. The text, “BOSS HUGO BOSS” appears vertically. Simple, not overdone, and quite masculine.

At the bottom of the box, off white coloured text let’s you know the size of the bottle, either a 50ml 1.7oz or a 100ml 3.4oz

The fragrance is manufactured in the UK by the Proctor and Gamble company.

The Bottle:

BOSS Bottled, the name itself is a perfect fit for exactly what the fragrance unboxed looks like: A BOSS fragrance in a clean and simple glass bottle.

It’s a simple not over done, typical bottle shape, with BOSS embossed onto it. The bottle is finished off with a gray cap.

No fancy paint work or text. Simple. Clean. Bottled

In the 2nd half of 2009, BOSS released a limited edition metal encased bottle called “Platinum Collectors” (see pic above). This could make a perfect gift for somebody special, as the bottle will serve as a remembrance even after the fragrance has been used up.

The Fragrance:

BOSS by HUGO BOSS is an Eau de Toilette

With top notes of Apple, Bergamot, Cinnamon, middle notes of  Geranium, Clove, Cedarwood, Sandalwood and Vetiver, fragrance designer Annick Menardo brings the essence of masculinity to surface.

The fragrance is fresh, spicy and sweet, if you can imagine that. The lasting power of BOSS Bottled is about 8hours. If you live in a more humid climate, use sparingly, as this might linger on longer than 8hours.

2005 marked the return of the fragrance department for Calvin Klein.

Return? Yes! Return. It had been 7 years since Calvin Klein fragrances launched a master brand. Crave, launched in  2002/2003, wasn’t really a master brand, and didn’t fare so well.

You see, Crave was launched, way ahead of it’s time, in my opinion, people, were not yet ready for the space age futuristic plastic bottle. Even though Crave was paired with hot Australian, Travis Fimmel as ‘the face’, it still didn’t manage to replicate the success of Eternity or Obsession for Calvin Klein.

The Calvin Klein fragrance division  is no slouch, they devised a come back.

They paired world famous fragrance designer Anne Gottlieb (Dior Jadore, Carolina Herrera 212, Calvin Klein Contradiction) with world famous bottle designer Fabien Baron.

The result was a unique, sophisticated and feminine scent. Add the finishing touches in the form of Russian model Natalia Vodianova (Louis Vuitton, Chanel), and you have a fragrance that would eventually win the women’s World Luxe Fragrance 2006!

The Packaging

Dark coloured, burgundy, classic Calvin Klein minimalist design.

In the light, you can almost see a line crease running diagonally on the box.

The Bottle

The bottle designer says that bottle represents an orchid about to bloom (Honestly, I think that it looks like an Orchid in full bloom).

The bottle is oblong glass cased with metal (prone to finger prints) there is no fancy writing on the metal. The nozzle is found on the top centre of the bottle with a very long rectangular cap.

The words ‘Calvin Klein Euphoria’ is engraved horizontally on the cap. I must add, that this again follows the minimalist approach. Classy.

Fragrance: Euphoria Calvin Klein is an Eau de Parfum

Dark burgundy colour, which matches the box.

An addictive oriental fragrance with notes of:

Top and Middle Notes:

Pomegranate, Persimmon, Lush Green Accord, Lotus Blossom, Champaca Flower and the famous Black Orchid.

Base Notes:

Liquid Amber, Black Violet, Cream Accord, Mahogany Wood

So here’s the thing: I’ve never really heard of “Black Orchid”, so I decided to do some research, and this is what I found:

The ‘black orchid’ does not exist…however…there are some species of orchids that are so dark in colour that they have been given the term “Black Orchid”.

Trichoglottis brachiata also known as Black Orchid

An example is the species “Trichoglottis Brachiata”. It is a dark maroon, burgundy colour (much like the colour of Calvin Klein’s Euphoria)

You see, Calvin Klein’s Euphoria is based entirely on the so-called black orchid, from the colour of the box, to the colour of the juice, to the shape of the bottle. A first in fragrance design if you ask me.

The fragrance has a delicious scent, with the cream accord and mahogany adding to this.

This oriental fragrance wears well over 8 hours on the skin, especially if you live in a humid climate.
